Opinion document: The return of Japan to geopolitics

The crucial strategic shifts taking place in the Asia-Pacific region are affecting the security of Japan. In this situation, the government of the country is determined to perform a more active effort in ensuring the security of the State and its citizens. In December 17, 2013, the first National Security Strategy of Japan was published. Basic guidelines for diplomacy and defense were set up for the next 10 years. The changes advocated by the Japanese government would represent a historic shift to the security policy followed by the Asian country since the end of World War II. This paper analyzes the Japanese Security Strategy and offers some considerations about the measures being taken that could be considered as the return of Japan to geopolitics.
