Opinion document: Gao, the city did not surrender

The March 31, 2012, the city of Gao (90,000 inhabitants), in northern Mali, fell into the hands of armed groups of distinct profile. On one hand, the Tuareg rebels of MNLA; on the other, radical jihadists of Mujao. With the disappearance of the State and for ten months, residents of this historic enclave faced up to this occupation and organized themselves into a kind of active opposition. This article is drawn from the direct testimonies of dozens of citizens and analyses how happened the conquest of Gao, in order to shed light on this key event in the recent history of Mali, as well as the way that citizen movement of resistance was conceived and its major milestones. These events went unnoticed by most of the media because the usual information channels were cut. To prepare this article, journalist José Naranjo Noble has spent long periods in Gao in direct contact with the population.
