Opinion document: The Spanish border management model in the context of the EU: successes and issues

The Spanish border management model is a direct result of being a member of the European Union and it shows a clear success in some areas as well as important challenges.
Among the successes border management against drug trafficking needs to be considered and as part of that, SIVE, the Spanish Guardia Civil´s technological support system that has played a key role in the last ten years making Spain one of the leaders in drug seizures.
Concerning the challenges, this article points out the mistake of understanding migration as a security issue and apply on it a securitization construction which worsens with the some citizen´s perception that consider irregular migration as a threat to security.
If this misconception was to be solved, the key values of the European Union would be more present as well as the security efforts could be led to counter security threats like drug trafficking.
