The new foreign policy of Saudi Arabia.- Alberto Priego Moreno

The coronation of King Salman has amounted to a final drive for the new Saudi foreign policy, a policy that began under the reign of King Abdullah. However this change came to a sudden halt due to domestic upheavals triggered by the Arab Spring. This new foreign policy is driven by two phenomena: the withdrawal of the United States from the region and, overall, the rise of Iran as a regional power. The new Saudi foreign policy may be noticed in aspects like the rebalance of bilateral relations, the Saudi confidence in military capabilities or a progressive attention of Ryad to non-state actors. However, some other foreign policy issues such as the Saudi economy or the energy strategy will not change substantially. In any case, the arrival of Salman and his new circle will mean a new foreign policy in Saudi Arabia.
