The nuclear triangle composed of India, Pakistan and China.- Miguel Gallardo Fernández-Díez

The nuclear triangle composed of India, Pakistan and China is an unstable one with unbalanced corners. Pakistan acts as if only its nuclear weapons could maintain India at bay, while it covertly plays a proxy war against India; India on the contrary, sees Pakistan’s activities as openly aggressive but it’s more concerned with the oppressive economic and military presence of China; meanwhile, China continues its progress leaving, slowly but steadily, India behind. Is it possible to employ effectively a Cold War style MAD to analyze this volatile triangle? This article argues that it’s not feasible due to the different perspective about nuclear deterrence between India and Pakistan. These differences, regardless of a future achievable China-India balance, will keep the triangle out of balance unavoidably.
