Tripoli: Between geosectarianism and national disaffection.- Francisco Salvador Barroso y Wissam Macaron

Lebanon is finding itself at a crossroad difficult to solve. The governmental power vacuum and the state weakness are taking the country to the collapse. National disaffection gains prominence due to the inability of the government to guarantee certain basic services like electricity, water, and garbage collection. In this power vacuum is where the presence of radical Islamists has become important because they present a different alternative to the state. The change of loyalties is served; the city of Tripoli could be presented as the paradigmatic learning example of this change of loyalties. Political polarization and disaffection towards the Lebanese state invite us to reflect on counterinsurgency measures which could be implemented by the state agency in order to regain the loyalty of most of their fellow citizens.
