Tunisia and Libya: Expansion of cross-border threats and potential impact on security in the region.- Emilio Duch Ramos

After four years of democratic transition political advances in Tunisia seems to be at stake by two factors that are putting in risk the country´s stability. The unstable situation in Libya, Tunisia´s eastern neighbour, with a severe civil conflict is causing disturbing repercussions in the security of this Maghrebi country. Inner tensions produced in Libya have their reflection in the Tunisian region of Jefara, where ethnic frictions linked to the control of informal trade and illicit traffics are in course on either side of the border. Furthermore, the reconfiguration of the North African jihadist scene, in which Libya is playing an essential role, also impacts directly in its western neighbour. Tunisia needs to adopt urgent measures relative to security, but they shall be accompanied with an effort of the International Community to stabilize Libya´s situation.
