Saudi Arabia. From "Three Covenants model" to "Vision 2030".- Alberto Priego Moreno

Over the last 70 years, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been based on the following three pillars. Firstly, from a religious point of view Wahhabism has been the doctrine that has given answers to Saudi people. While is certain that in some occasions Wahhabism could result very controversial, its implementation has been uncontested and incontestable in Saudi Arabia. Secondly, the Kingdom built a Socio-Economic model based on a grants and benefits that became Saudi Arabia in a Rentier State. This policy allowed the Saudis to enjoy of high levels of well-being with few personal efforts and sacrifices. Finally the Kingdom looked for a political-international agreement (peace for oil) that has allowed Arab country to enjoy of an unthinkable stability in a region which is very unstable. This model has remained very stable up to 20th Century. The crisis of the "three covenants model" has been provoked both by exogenous and endogenous causes although it is complicated to make such division.
