The 'symbols' and 'counter-symbols' of war: meaning and strategy of the offensive against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.- Fernando Prieto Arellano

The battle against the Islamic State, which in its military dimension we can exemplify in the offensives on the cities of Dabiq, Mosul and Raqa, is also and in a very specific way a war among "symbols" and "counter-symbols"; a war waged by an hermetic and closed view of Islam against a combination of diverse elements, not all Islamic, leaving behind the role of the West in a struggle whose deepest dimension we seem unable to understand.
