Impact of BREXIT on the evolution of the research and innovation policy in the European Union: implications for Spain.- Gonzalo León Serrano

The formal request from the United Kingdom to abandon the European Union has opened a long and complex negotiation process which affects the Community and Member States policies. Multiple analyses on a number of aspects were produced but only a few of them from the perspective of the impact on research and innovation policies.

This article analyses this impact taking as a basis its participation in Horizon 2020. This discussion is also framed in the context of the new EU Framework Programme to be approved in 2020. This fact will force the EU to reposition the relationships with the UK depending on the negotiation outcome. Finally, the EU has modified its policy on funding R&D in defence looking for the strengthening of the European Defence industry. From this perspective, the participation of the UK in this collective effort is crucial and a key issue in the negotiation process.
