Russia’s energy geostrategy in Europe.- Beatriz Piedras Martínez

Energy resources allow Russia to position itself in geopolitics and to take a leadership role on its area of influence. The geostrategic use of these resources has enabled them to recuperate the status lost at the end of the Cold War and it has contributed to domestic political stability. The European Union weakness is a consequence of the need to search for energy security abroad, with Russia as the main source. The sanctions imposed by the international community and the low gas and oil prices hinder Russia’s strategy due to the loss in benefit margin. This makes Russia depend more on the profits and stability of the European market. Tighter relationships between Russian and some European states due to new projects for gas transit threaten to create internal divisions.
