Crisis of Kabila’s third term in office underpins chaos in Congo.- Andrés González Cervera

The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a great institutional crisis since the December 19, 2016 expiration of the second term of President Joseph Kabila, without it convened elections. The Congolese president has tried to revalidate his third term, a widespread practice among African presidents. This situation of political blockade has reinforced the panorama of chaos and insecurity throughout the country: armed insurrections, disproportionate reaction from the security forces, large movements of refugees, murders of members of MONUSCO, massive prison escapes, cholera epidemics, etc. To all this, the corruption scandals linked to the government of Kabila are added. The pressure of the opposition forces the president to seek a solution that could end up concreting itself in the celebration of elections at the end of the year.
