The evolution of realism in International Relations: appliance of Game Theory to the Syrian War.- Lluís Torres Amurgo.

International Relations (IR) constitute an interaction order between the main socio-political entities of the international scene: the nation-states. This order, forged through the historical evolution of the European logics of interrelation between those subjects and spread to the global level through the continental colonization, conceives the foreign policy of states as a sequence of trials of strength the objective of which is the fulfilment of its national interests: ultimately, the maximization of its relative power in order to guarantee its own survival. This structural framework, based on the conceptions of political realism, has evolved, mainly through Rational Choice Theory and Game Theory, into the improvement of the instrumental rationality of the states’ decision-making process. In this regard, the appliance of Game Theory to the strategic situations given between the United States, Russia, Turkey and Syria in operations like Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch and Peace Spring, launched by Ankara in the framework of Syrian War, constitute an optimal model to exemplify the validity of this conceptualization of IR.
