Sudan and South Sudan: Challenges for peaceful coexistence (DIEEEA51-2012)

The independence of South Sudan, on July 9, 2011, was not enough to establish peaceful and stable relations with its northern neighbor, Sudan. Since that historic date, outstanding issues from the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 have provoked a huge escalation of military tension between the two countries and have become the main obstacle to peace.
On September 27, Omar al-Bashir and Salva Kiir signed a new compromise on border security and oil trade. However, any agreement will be provisional and limited until an international border between Sudan and South Sudan is established. The disputed region of Abey, and sovereignty over South Kordofan and Blue Nile States are still hampering a roadmap that, despite international efforts, has an unpredictable way forward.
