Lethal autonomous weapons (LAW) (DIEEEA56-2014)

Lethal autonomous weapons (LAW) have been identified as a relevant future problem given the growing use of drones and other remotely controlled systems, naval, terrestrial or submarine, in conflict scenarios. Differing from the former ones, an autonomous system would not require human control for its operation, and it as an artificial intelligence algorithm what would control its actions. In this scenario in which a machine can decide when and what to attack, several movements have rised against the development of this kind of systems, claiming for a ban as already applies to other conventional weapons. This subject is being thoroughly dealt in UN, by the Certain Conventional Weapons Convention, and some of the collectives pursuing the ban have been invited to participate in the related meetings.
