Aeneas (Rome), the manifest destiny (USA) and the myth of exceptionalism (DIEEEA01-2018)

The American founding myth has a remarkable parallelism with that of the Roman Empire narrated in the well-known poem that Virgil wrote on behalf of Princeps Augusto, The Aeneid, in praise of Rome. The American version of the Roman epic would be the manifest destiny and its later development in the myth of "exceptionalism", not in the meaning of distinction that A. Tocqueville had granted in The American Democracy, but in that of messianism given by the American intellectuals of the nineteenth century. The myth of exceptionalism endures nowadays, as it can be gathered from the new National Security Strategy of the United States of America.
