Maghreb’s security scenario 2040.- Fernando Caballero Echevarría

Maghreb’s security scenario is conditioned by its proximity to two geostrategic regions that spread insecurity: Sahel and Middle East. On the other hand, the obvious divergences between the main regional powers (Morocco and Algeria), create insurmountable barriers, as of now, in order to meet the security challenges in the Mediterranean South Bank, challenges that threaten Europe right out of its gates. The evolution of the situation in the cited conflictive regions and the rapprochement between both powers are key to the evolution of the security scenario from present time to 2040. Of particular importance are the increase in governance, economic and social development and therefore international cooperation, and lastly the diplomatic activity that may help in putting down barriers. Thus, the behaviour of these two factors along the next two decades will condition the final situation.
