Since northern Mali’s takeover by jihadist forces, many have warned that Niger would follow; the weakest link in the chain of sahelian countries threatened by AQIM and affiliated groups. Being one of the poorest countries in the world, surrounded by focal points of instability in Mali, Libya and Nigeria, and having suffered a tuareg rebellion a few years ago, this prediction is understandable.
