Reflections for a future strategy of the EU in the Gulf of Guinea (DIEEEO118-2014)

The Gulf of Guinea has become an area of special interest due to its geostrategic situation and emerging natural resources. The UE, in order to increase its global geopolitics influence, is developing a comprehensive strategy concerning the Gulf. In today`s clearly restrictive economic scenario, a purely comprehensive strategy may have an unrealistic application on the field. To effectively apply efforts, both in time and place, becomes necessary in order to achieve the desired end state. The future EU Global Strategy in the Gulf of Guinea must take the bilateral strategies in place as a starting point from a modular, sequential approach. Otherwise, the traditional “comprehensive Approach” will drive us to an oversized and unrealistic “Capacity building”.
