The hybrid conflict (DIEEEO120-2014)

Defined after the 2006 summer war between Israel and Hezbollah and currently used for explaining the tactics used by the Taliban, the Syirian opposition, the Islamic State in Iraq or the Russian forces in Ukraine, the concept of hybrid conflict has acquired a significan degree of popularity for defining the “new wars” of the 21st Century. Aimed at defining a type of conflict that combines the use of irregular and conventional, albeit limited, ways of fighting, this idea is receiving a significant amount of attention despite the controversies it produces. This document is aimed at defining the concept, studying its theoretical development, identifying its fundamental characteristics and evaluating its real effectiveness.
