The Zaatari refugee camp (north of Jordan) (DIEEEO41-2014)

The innovative management put in place in the Zaatari refugee camp (north of Jordan) is changing the paradigm in United Nations, its agencies and the international NGO. This new way of distributing humanitarian aid will impact in how to assist refugees in all over the world in the future. The Syrian refugees themselves, through their own comunity leaders, participate in the decision-making, have a voice on how to run the camp, are implicated in conflict mediation and are compromised with the security issues. Involving them in an efficient functioning of everyday life in the camp has the aim of avoiding tensions, but also prepares them for the future day when they are able to come back to Syria. This model has improved the security situation inside the camp, where tensions and violence have taken place since its opening, in July 2012.
