The Peninsula of the Sinai: from the occupation to the terrorism (DIEEEO113-2015)

Since the Arab Spring, Egypt has seen a notable increase in the number of terrorist attacks, however, the Sinai Peninsula had endured instability for many years before the revolutions started. The rise of the jihadist groups is symptomatic of the conflicts in the peninsula, as well as the influence that local and external, non-state and state actors and groups have had. But, above all, the problematic relationship that the Sinai population has had with the Egyptian state has enabled the establishment of terrorist groups. The marginalisation and exclusion from the economic and social development of the region has created a safe haven for jihadists. The frustration of the people of Sinai has been reflected in the attacks, which have mainly had as a target the military and security services of the state.
