The National Strategy of Maritime Security of France: analysis and comments (DIEEEO69-2016)

In a more and more complex maritime environment, where the diversity of threats has changed the meaning of the maritime security, leaving behind old concepts centered mainly on the protection of trading routes, it has become necessary to define strategies leading to safeguard the national interests. The French National Maritime Security Strategy 2015 sets the course, actions and means, to protect its maritime spaces, defines precisely the existing threats and puts an emphasis on essential factors like the maritime dimension of the economy or the sustainability and defense of maritime resources. In addition, France resolves the diverse nature of bodies and agencies involved in maritime security by means of the coast guard function and the “préfect maritime”, a figure that has been present in the French coastal departments for more than two centuries.
