The effort to recognize the environmental refugee: the Nansen Initiative (DIEEEO03-2017)

The UNHCR, IPPC and Norwegian refugee council reports indicate a brand new reality such the environmental refugees or displaced persons; this kind of displacement is real everywhere. Every year, we have new data on the influence and consequences of natural disasters as floods, cyclones, hurricanes or earthquakes (Haiti, Chile, Bangladesh, Bosnia …) and Climate Change about population and communities. The environmental displacement currently lacks legal protection along the 1951 Geneva Convention. The Nansen initiative is a joint proposal of Norway and Switzerland that was born in 2012 and its objective is to generate a new debate process about this reality inside the international society among its members. Also, this initiative tries through regional activities, to promote initiatives that allow in a close future to incorporate the figure of environmental displaced people inside the international protection established in the refugee status of the 1951 Geneva Convention.
