The challenges of Jordan: security at the northern border and economic stability (DIEEEO100-2017)

Internal political tensions and the severe economic crisis are two of the internal challenges faced by Jordan, which is home to 1.4 million Syrian refugees. The Hashemite Kingdom is the country with the second largest number of refugees within its borders, contributing to social destabilization. Moreover, the self-proclaimed Islamic State (Daesh) is, since 2015, one more ingredient of the explosive cocktail into which the border with Syria has developed". Jordan, which attempts to escape the contagion of conflict, needs to maintain the impermeability of its borders and control over its cities.
