Russian military activity in the Arctic (DIEEEO39-2017)

The global warming is raising uncertainty about its effects, especially the melting of the Arctic and its ecological consequences. However, it is also creating great expectations about the great wealth that it may bring and the opportunity to create a shorter and safer maritime route between Asia and Europe. Therefore, the countries that consider themselves entitled to exploit it are taking a stance. In the case of Russia, the attitude is quite aggressive. They are getting prepared using all their available means, such as reinforcing of old bases and creating new ones, building icebreakers with large military capacity, increasing the command and control capacities, adapting submarines, reinforcing weapons systems and many others. Altogether, this activity is becoming disturbing for the rest of the world.
