Singapore Summit: an opportunity for peace.- José Enrique de Ayala

On June 12, the President of the United States, Donald Trump and the Supreme Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Jong-un, met in Singapore in a new attempt to achieve a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula that should include the dismantling of North Korea's nuclear capacity in exchange for certain economic compensations and security guarantees. The summit, which has been described as historic, because never before had a meeting at this level, has been settled with a joint statement that most experts consider generic and vague. Nevertheless, although the previous agreements have always ended in failure, this time, given the economic difficulties and lack of support suffered by the North Korean regime, the summit could be a decisive impetus to undertake detailed negotiations leading to the dismantling of its nuclear arsenal and achieve definitive peace in the Korean peninsula and greater stability in the region.
