Key Geopolitical around the South Atlantic conflict (DIEEEM13-2012)

The increasing dispute in the South Atlantic area has redefined the nature of it. Three geopolitical facts help to understand what is happening today in that area of the planet: the competition for natural resources (particularly oil and fish), the projection into the Antarctic and the effective control of territorial spaces, of the islands. The dispute offers an extraordinary uniqueness, the clash of two entirely distinct “orbis pictus”. On one hand, the exercise of power as understood historically, with political, diplomatic and military capacities by the British side, and the Argentina option for a soft power common foreign and defense posture. The prolonged lack of investment in the Argentina Defence sector invites to question whether such option is by necessity or by conviction.
