Uzbekistan, key piece of the geopolitical scene in Asia (DIEEEO131-2014)

The Ukrainian crisis has all brought the relationship between Russia and the West to its lowest point since the Cold War. Moreover, there has been a growing distrust in the post-Soviet states toward Russia, as much in those countries that have formed with Russia the Eurasian Economic Union, as in those that have adopted a position of equidistance from external interference. Uzbekistan is a landlocked Central Asian state located near to China and Russia and has borders with Afghanistan. However, despite its common history with Russia and other regional neighbors, the Uzbek political stability is the basic guarantee against foreign interference and that has consolidated its independent and balanced foreign policy. The country addresses the challenges of a gradually shift in the political landscape, with parliamentary (December 21) and presidential (March 2015) elections of particular relevance to the regional stability.
