South Sudan , insurmountable obstacles and challenges to peace ? (DIEEEO24-2016)

In December 2013, the fragile peace in South Sudan broke out in a civil war instigated by the lust for power of its top leaders: President Salva Kiir and his former vice president Rieck Marchar. After months of failed negotiations, international pressure forced them to sign a complex peace agreement in August 2015, and now –six months later– they will be again responsible for ensuring the security, stability and prosperity of the country. At the moment, far from implementing the transitional government, the leaders of the warring factions remain the main obstacle; while the biggest challenge is the determination of the International Community to force them to build peace.
