Influence of transnational criminal networks in conflicts (DIEEET12-2016)

In a globalized world, threats transcend frontiers. Criminal networks take advantage of any situation that may benefit their illicit activities. Conflict is a lucrative business: smuggling of guns, people and drugs; extortion and kidnapping. This paper is focused on the countries of the Sahel and the Middle East. In it, transnational crime, its geographical range and the routes utilized by these networks as well as its influence over the origin and evolution of the conflicts in the area and their relation with terrorist groups is analyzed. Furthermore the attitude of states and organizations towards these criminal networks is defined, focusing in the Spanish case and the challenges faced due to the growing threat towards the international community from the transnational organized crime.
