The critical elements of the Energy Sector: A Matter of Geopolitics (DIEEEI12-2012)

Some chemicals, mainly of the Group of the lanthanides, have become critical materials because they are essential for the development of low carbon energy sources and new technologies. Get the assurance of its supply is a matter of concern for U.S. and European Union. Both of them have developed specific strategies to address this problem. In addition, China, main source of these metals, wants to impose limitations in their exports and favoring consumption internal. Critical materials market has become a geopolitical issue to cross the line of strictly commercial interests.
