Unconventional hydrocarbons (DIEEET01-2014)

Unconventional hydrocarbons are those that require for their removal, transportation and handling other treatments than those required for conventional hydrocarbons. This paper analyzes both, unconventional oils and natural gases.
The main non-conventional oils are: Extra heavy oil (10º API) whose most important reserves are located in Venezuela (about 250 Gb recoverable). Tar sands, preferably located in Canada (recoverable reserves of around 450 Gb).
Reserves of unconventional natural gas are important specially because of their contents on tight sands, coal formations and tight sands. Current U.S. production of unconventional natural gas is close to 50% of total production, having achieved fuel self-sufficiency.
