The concept of energy security has already been included for years in the national security strategies, such as it has been the case for Spain and other European Union countries. Algeria, the military power in the Maghreb region, is the eight world exporter of gas and the third for supplier of the EU, with around 25% of the European market share of gas. Spain is the second market for Algerian gas; it means that the risks around Algerian energy are also threats to the Spanish energy security. Algerian terrorism is therefore a clear danger towards Spanish security, and although terrorist attacks against energy infrastructures are not frequent, they can however have enormous repercussions both in the short and long term for Spain and thus for the European Union.
