Strategic natural resources (DIEEEO38-2017)

Natural resources have always played an important role in the development of strategies. Indeed, the availability of certain natural resources, and the forms of appropriation, exploitation, commercialization and final destination of such resources, shape the new geopolitical games and affect the world socio-economic order greatly.

As a consequence, this article first studies the parameters that endow a natural resource with its strategic character. Subsequently, it studies in a generalized manner the strategic value of the natural resources regarding human security (water, food and arable land), and those important for industry and trade (energy resources, mineral resources, and crops regarding the pharmaceutical industry and drugs). Finally, it proposes a structure to the articles that will follow, which will study each strategic natural resource in a more specific and detailed way.
