Nuclear Proliferation in the 21ST Century (DIEEEM05-2016)

From a realistic point of view, the acquisition of nuclear weapons provides military advantage. Due to this fact, many countries have tried to develop such weapons during the second half of the 20th Century; and it is highly probable that more than one is doing so at the dawning of the 21st Century. The North Korean nuclear test in January 2016 confirms that the nuclear proliferation threat is still high. On the other hand, most countries complied with the international treaties which ban or regulate the possession of nuclear weapons.
The Non- Proliferation Treaty is the main agreement among nations and it has contributed to avoid the growth of the nuclear club beyond a dozen members; despite the fact that initial estimations foresaw that by the end of the century over twenty countries would have joined. However, the risk associated to increasing the number of nuclear countries is so high that the International Community must not settle with what we have achieved to this moment, and new measures must be taken in an effort to avoid nuclear proliferation.
These new measures must be even more effective by developing a thorough analysis that
enables us to identify every aspect witch intervenes in its design. This way we will contribute to
reduce national motivations that can push a nation towards nuclear proliferation.
