The future of UN peacekeeping missions: the role of Regional Organizations (DIEEEO25-2012)

The increasing complexity and conflicts on the world stage have overtaken the ability of the United Nations (UN) to protect international peace and security by the dynamics and characteristics of these conflicts. In this context, regional organizations (OR) have had to take a series of tasks, both independently and in cooperation with the UN to contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security.

The recent crisis in Libya has reopened the debate on the role of regional organizations - in this case, NATO, the European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) - in managing the challenges to peace and security. It has also shown the necessity of implementing a "regional" focus to the crisis and has proven that the most efficient way of act is through local institutional actors with presence or projection capabilities in the areas of conflict.
