Three years fighting against piracy in the Indian Ocean, results and future prospects (DIEEEO21-2012)

Following an intensive piracy period during the first two years since the Counter piracy operations started in the Indian Ocean; last year has been characterized by a progressive reduction of the Piracy activity and, as a consequence, an encouraging reduction in the number of pirated ships.

These optimistic results could be attributed to the successfully CP disruptions, thanks to a more robust profile; coupled with the increase in the profile of BMP compliance and the use of private armed security companies by merchant shipping.

Nevertheless, there is still a long road ahead. The key to find a solution in the medium and long term requires a comprehensive approach, including military, legal, diplomat and political approaches. International Community has a lot to say and should improve its commitment through supporting local authorities to stabilise Somalia and developing capacities of Regional Countries to prosecute pirates and to be able to patrol their own TTWs.
