Impact of the global crisis at the United Nations (DIEEEO19-2013)

The magnitude of the present global economic crisis has forced all governments to make in-depth reviews of policies and priorities. The United Nations, our best vehicle for international cooperation, is no exception. The United States, currently the largest contributor, is the proponent of an ambitious plan of reforms designed to sustain the organization. Spain, all European Union member states and those of the Western European Group have joined this initiative.
Agreements reached at the last Main Session of the 67th General Assembly’s Fifth Committee demonstrate a mindset change away from traditional funding increases in the regular budget, and introduce new organizational resource management strategies.
