After 54 years, 6 months and 7 days, diplomatic relations have been fully restored between the United States and Cuba. The opening measures announced by Raul Castro and the new direction in foreign policy opted for by the Obama administration have been decisive in this process. Nevertheless, the successful end result could not have been possible without the push of an erga omnes authority to channel the will. Pontifical Diplomacy has been that visible and yet discreet hand which has eased the way to the historical handshake between the two leaders and the raising of national flags, both in Havana and Washington. Of course not all are happy. Many Cuban nationals in exile, opposed to the Castro regime, have voiced their discontent. In the air hangs, now, a question: to what extent will these historical events affect the upcoming US presidential elections?
