Geopolitics have returned (DIEEEA06-2017)

It’s gaining ground the notion that geopolitics have returned and a multipolar global order is being rebuilt. This circumstance is not transitory, as the emergence of China together with the prospect of becoming the first world power in the next decades implies the progressive reinforcement of geopolitics as a backbone of international relations. This fact does not necessarily mean confrontation and war between the main centers of power in the world. In that sense nuclear weapons have changed the logic of history. But as a consequence of the tectonic forces that are rearranging the international order, tensions and growing difficulties can be expected. In any case, the future will be better addressed if both the sensitivities and the determinants of geopolitics are taken into account.
