The return of Europe? (DIEEEO109-2017)

On the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, the European Union has been bestowed with the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord in the midst of some media controversy. In 2012, just five years before and still in the middle of the Great Recession, the European Union received the Nobel Peace Prize for the same reasons without dissenting voices. What has changed since then? Why do we find a more contested Europe than ever, just when it seems that we are now at the beginning of a certain economic recovery? How the Union addresses this dilemma? Reviewing the steps taken during the first year of the EU's Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy (EUGS) can help us assess the role that security and defense policy is playing within the Union.
