Electromagnetic Pulse and Radiofrequency Weapons: Developed Societies´ Vulnerability (DIEEEA16-2018)

Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a phenomenon that could happen both by natural occurrence or consequence from a nuclear detonation. Its effects are especially harmful for electricity grids, communication assets and electronic equipment. Although this kind of events have already happened in the past, their results could be catastrophic nowadays. This issue is best explained by current society’s technical development, which links its survival to interconnected critical infrastructures. Due to the aforementioned facts, procedures must be implemented in order to enable these vital services´ continuity, to assure civil population´s survivability. In the same way, Armed Forces must undertake research studies to guarantee operations´ continuity regardless potential EMP based weapons attacks, both from nuclear and radiofrequency originated.
