Militant groups of radical ideology and violent character: new classification and identification (DIEEEINV08-2017)

In order to analyze this type of ideologies, it is key to emphasize the role they play in the processes of radicalization, as well as the consolidation of collective identities. However, while it is true that violent radicalization has been pursued with greater attention, another factor that should not be overlooked is the role played by cognitive radicalization, which precedes violence. This article tries to conduct an schematic analysis of the importance of the ideologies in the appearance of extremist groups, as well as to conceive a new classification of militant groups of radical ideology and violent character, in five great scenarios: Mena Region and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, North America and Central America, and South America.
