Analysis document: What is ECOWAS? Strengths and weaknesses to deal the conflict in Mali

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a group of fifteen countries, founded in 1975. Its mission is to promote economic integration and ensure regional security. At the beginning of 2012, ECOWAS took the initiative to help Mali in their fight against the jihadism in the North of the country. In December, the United Nations Security Council authorized an international mission (AFISMA), led by ECOWAS. Faced with this challenge, the strengths and weaknesses of the African force determine the planning of this operation and the international support.
