Opinion document: The European Defence Industry. Facing the future

A strong and competitive Defense Industry is a prerequisite for developing and sustaining the Defense capabilities required by Europe. Declining Defense budgets and the fragmentation of European demand and supply requirements jeopardize viability of European defense industries. The lack of a clear definition of the Common Security and Defense policy (CSDP) and the firm commitment of the European Commission to regulate de Defense market are also factors to take in consideration when discussing the future of the European defense industries. In any case the role of Member States (MS) has been very important for the sector in the past and they will have to be taken in consideration also in the future. The European Council will take in December 2013 important decisions to develop the CSDP including the strengthening of Europe´s Defense industries. In any case the concerted effort of all stakeholders is required to safeguard the future of Europe´s Defense industries.
