Opinion document: The Electoral Observation Mission of the OSCE / ODIHR

With the end of the Cold War and the transformation of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) into a permanent body (the CSCE), the 56 member states decided to refocus its objectives to attend their new political necessities. Electoral Observation was one of them.
Oriented at the beginning to the most fragile democracies just recently independent, since 2000 the observation includes all the OSCE member states in the application sovereign equality among nations. Today the Missions go not only to countries such as Kazakhstan, Georgia or Serbia but also to the USA, Spain or Iceland.
ODIHR electoral Observation is one of the most relevant diplomatic activities deployed nowadays. The nations must be aware that the Observation Missions do not have as an aim to interfere with the internal affairs of a country but to help him to reach the desirable democratic standard in the Euro-Atlantic environment.
