Opinion document: The III Descentralization Act in Senegal: Challenges and perspectives for the future

Descentralization in Senegal as a reference political framework is previous to the independence of this country. Since 1972, this process has been irreversibly continued. In 1972 took place the first first step of Senegal State y that sense, with the establishment of local communities. A new political reform, approved in 1996, made feasible a framework of close relationship with the state authorities, as well as the prevalence of local governments responsibilities.
Weaknesses shown by territorial administration policies in Senegal have driven towards a re-organization of the political landscape in that countru, passing the so called III Descentralization Act, in order to achieve the empowerment of local communities.
The III Descentralization Act will promote the development of an emergent Senegal meanwhile relevant complementary measures are also adopted.
