A trip to the cultural heart of Central Asia: Uzbekistan and its recent elections.- Jesús Gil Fuensanta y Alejandro Lorca

Uzbekistan, one of the main republics of Central Asia, in appearance, is the country with a greater political and ethnic stability in the area. As the main cause of it, we noticed a number of reasons, including the local cultural and historical facts, but in addition we have the efforts after the Uzbek government to control the “step by step” reforms (including free elections, measures against corruption and the establishment of industrial infrastructure and communications) to reach a democratic system type. The personality of the president, Islam Karimov Abduganievich is a fundamental pivot in the whole equation. However, the country has a number of challenges ahead, not specifically for internal reasons, but especially because the environmental conditions and the volatile stability in several of the neighboring republics, as it is the most visible case of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. What happens in those republics can always affect the future History of Uzbekistan.
