Analysis of the communication strategy of jihadist terrorism : the role of social networks.- Mª Eugenia Tapia Rojo

Currently, jihadi terrorism is a topic situated at the centre of the international communities’ attention. Although the atrocities and the sheer brutality are in themselves eye-catching, the success of these groups is also due to a planned and centralized communication strategy based on the use of the Internet and on the new technologies. In this context, Twitter has risen as a primary protagonist; in 2014, ISIS had more than 40,000 related accounts. This strategy and their ability to adapt to the new tendencies, faster than the counterterrorism, allowed them to reach a huge audience, to publicize their actions, frighten populations and to attract followers.
